EA Classics on Steam: 25 Restored PC Games Led by Road Rash and Wing Commander

EA just did something genuinely good for game preservation. On November 5, the publisher put 25 classic PC games on Steam, GOG, and the EA App for the first time, and seven of them are rebuilt Anniversary Editions with cinematics recovered from EA's own tape archive. The headliners are Road Rash and six Wing Commander titles, but the full list runs deep into PC gaming history, from Ultima to Theme Hospital.
The EA Classics on Steam launch is the end of a preservation project that started in March 2022, when EA senior producer Jim Vessella found a vast physical media vault at the company's Redwood Shores campus. The team spent years digitizing the contents. By April 2026 it had worked through 6,000 tapes, recovering more than 1,500 cinematic scenes from the original master recordings. Those recovered cinematics are the heart of the Anniversary Editions, which present the games' full-motion video at higher resolution than any previous release managed.
What EA Classics on Steam Includes
Seven games got the full restoration treatment. Road Rash returns as a 30th Anniversary Edition, and it is the first time the 1996 PC version has been available digitally at all. Wing Commander gets six Anniversary Editions: the original and Wing Commander II at 35 years, plus Wing Commander III, Wing Commander IV, Wing Commander: Prophecy, and Privateer 2: The Darkening at 30 years. The other 18 titles are faithful re-releases rather than restorations, and they cover Wing Commander: Privateer, Academy, and Armada, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, both Crusader games, nine mainline Ultima games, and the two Ultima Underworld titles.
The Anniversary Editions are not straight ports. EA lists native Windows 10 and 11 compatibility, 16:9 resolutions, high-resolution upscaling, quick save and quick load, a new save system, controller support, gameplay upgrades, and new soundtracks among the improvements. The Wing Commander editions also officially include mods built by the game's community, which is a nice acknowledgment that fans kept these games alive while EA did not sell them.
How Much EA Classics on Steam Costs
Pricing is refreshingly simple. Each Anniversary Edition costs $9.99, and each of the other 18 games costs $4.99. EA is running special pricing on Steam and GOG from November 5 to 19, with the games reportedly 50 percent off during the sale window, and VGC reports the Ultima and Wing Commander titles can also be bought in bundles at 55 percent off. If you already own a Wing Commander game digitally on GOG or the EA App, the matching Anniversary Edition upgrade is free on that platform.
That pricing matters because it undercuts the usual retro tax. A $5 entry point for Theme Hospital or an Ultima game, and $10 for a restored Road Rash with recovered cinematics, is the kind of pricing that gets people to actually try games they have only heard about. Compare that with the remaster market, where a single touched-up classic can cost $30 or more, and EA's approach looks generous.
Why This Release Matters for Preservation
The remaster trend has mostly been about polishing games that were already easy to buy. EA's project is different because it started from a vault of physical media that could easily have been lost. The 6,000 digitized tapes are not just a marketing story. They are the reason these versions exist in watchable form at all, and EA says the work continues beyond this batch.
It also sets a useful precedent. Publishers sit on enormous back catalogs that are not for sale anywhere, and the usual excuse is that the source materials are lost or the audience is too small. EA just showed that a team with a tape vault and a few years of patience can bring 25 of them back at once, at prices that make sense. Other publishers should be taking notes.
The obvious question is what comes next. EA has not announced a second wave, but the restoration pipeline it built for this project is the kind of thing that only makes sense if it gets used again. For now, the 25 games are live on EA's official announcement page, and the sale pricing runs until November 19. Road Rash fans waited more than 30 years for a legal digital copy. That wait is over.
