Gen.G Sweep LYON 3-0, No Upset This Time

There was no upset. Gen.G Esports defeated LYON 3-0 in the second quarterfinal of the League of Legends World Championship 2026, and in doing so booked a semifinal against Invictus Gaming on November 7. Played at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas, the series was the most one-sided of the knockout stage so far, with Gen.G winning through an overwhelming gap in raw capability across all three games.

LYON arrived as North America's hope and the tournament's surprise package, but the gap showed early. Driven by Kiin and Canyon, Gen.G took Game 1 with controlled aggression, and the series never really tightened from there. By Game 3, the gold lead had ballooned past 6,000, and a final mid-lane teamfight ended in an ace without a single Gen.G casualty. LYON fought, but they were never allowed to play their game.

The result sets up a semifinal with real history behind it. Gen.G already beat IG 1-0 in the Swiss Stage, where Gen.G finished with a perfect 3-0 record, but knockout-stage best-of-fives are a different animal, and IG arrive red-hot after eliminating Top Esports 3-1 in the opening quarterfinal. The winner of that semifinal reaches the grand final in Brooklyn on November 14.

How the Series Played Out

Game 1 set the tone. Kiin and Canyon dictated the early map, Gen.G converted small leads into objectives, and LYON's attempts to find picks ran into a team that simply did not overextend. It was the kind of game that looks quiet on the kill feed and feels suffocating if you are on the receiving end.

Games 2 and 3 followed the same script with different details: Gen.G's teamfighting stayed cleaner, their objective control stayed tighter, and LYON's windows to come back kept closing before they opened. The Game 3 ace that ended the series summed it up. LYON committed to a mid-lane fight they had to win, Gen.G answered perfectly, and the Nexus fell minutes later. Inven Global's match report called it a shutout without an upset, and that is exactly right: the better team won every game, and the score flattered nobody.

For LYON, the run still matters. Reaching the quarterfinals as a North American side in a tournament dominated by the LCK and LPL is a genuine achievement, and the experience of a knockout-stage best-of-five against the tournament favorite is worth more than the 0-3 scoreline suggests. For Gen.G, the message is simpler: they are the team to beat, and they know it.

What the Gen.G vs IG Semifinal Means

The first semifinal on November 7 pits the tournament's most complete team against its best story. IG's road back to the last four is remarkable: a 17th-place finish at last year's Worlds, then a quarterfinal win over Top Esports that put TheShy and Rookie one series from another grand final, seven years after their 2018 title run. Gen.G's road has been quieter and more dominant: 3-0 in Swiss, 3-0 in quarters, no series lost yet.

The matchup also decides which region gets a guaranteed finalist. With IG through and Gen.G now joining them, one side of the bracket is an LCK vs LPL showdown, while the other side still has to be decided. Dplus KIA face Bilibili Gaming on November 5, and defending champions T1 play Karmine Corp on November 6, both at 4 PM Central. The second semifinal follows on November 8.

A few numbers frame the stakes. Worlds 2026 carries a $5,000,000 prize pool with $1,000,000 for the winner, and each losing semifinalist takes home $400,000, so IG and Gen.G are already guaranteed that sum. The final is set for Saturday, November 14 at 2 PM Eastern in Brooklyn. Every knockout match is a single-elimination best-of-five played with Fearless Draft, which means no champion repeats across games in a series, and coaches earn their money in the draft as much as in the game.
