PS5 Prism Collection: Three Transparent Designs

The PS5 Prism Collection is Sony's answer to a question a lot of players have been asking since the late 1990s: when do we get see through hardware again? Sony revealed the collection on PlayStation Blog on October 28, and it is exactly what it sounds like: transparent DualSense wireless controllers and matching PS5 console covers in three colors, Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray, each finished with a high gloss clear shell that lets you see the hardware inside. Pre-orders open November 10, 2026, and the collection launches February 4, 2027.

The design story is the interesting part. Sony's Color, Material, and Finish team, Leo Cardoso and Satoshi Aoyagi, say the collection was inspired by a desire to give players a closer look at the design and craftsmanship behind the DualSense and the PS5 itself. The high gloss clear finish runs across the back of the controller, showing off the technology that powers it while keeping a clean, single color look. The middle cover uses a metallic finish to tie the contrasting surfaces together, and each color behaves differently through the transparent material: Flare Orange takes on a rosy hue where layers overlap, Emerald Green gains depth, and Graphite Gray stays cool and stormy. It is nostalgia, but it is also a genuine design exercise, not just a clear shell slapped on an old controller.

PS5 Prism Collection: Price, Pre-Orders, and What to Watch

Pricing is straightforward, with one important split between controllers and covers. The DualSense controllers cost $84.99 in the US, 84.99 euros, 74.99 pounds, or 12,480 yen, and they will be available globally. The matching console covers cost $74.99 in the US, 74.99 euros, 64.99 pounds, or 9,980 yen, but they will be sold directly from PlayStation where that store operates, and only in limited quantities through select retailers elsewhere. The covers are also made for the current standard PS5 model, so check your console version before ordering: this is not a one size fits all accessory.

Pre-order timing follows Sony's usual pattern. In the US, pre-orders start November 10 at 7am PT (10am ET) through direct.playstation.com. In the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, they start at 10am local time through the PlayStation store hardware section. Everywhere else PlayStation Direct operates, it is 10am local time, plus participating retailers. Sony notes that the exact launch date and availability may vary by country, so if you want a specific color, especially Flare Orange, which is the obvious crowd pleaser, do not assume stock will hang around.

PS5 Prism Collection: Is It Worth It

The honest answer depends on what you want from a controller. At $84.99, the Prism DualSense costs $10 more than a standard DualSense, which is a fair premium for a special edition finish, and it carries the same haptics, adaptive triggers, and built in microphone as the regular controller. You are paying for the look, and the look is the point: a transparent controller on a desk next to a matching console is a statement piece in a way a black controller never will be. The console covers are the harder sell at $74.99, since they change nothing about how the console plays, but for players who already collect special edition hardware, matching covers complete the set.

Sony's timing is also worth noting. The Prism Collection arrives in a year crowded with tie in controllers, and a clean, non collaboration design stands out precisely because it is not tied to a single game. It is also a smart piece of hardware theater ahead of the holiday season: pre-orders in November, launch in February, and a design that photographs beautifully.
